Find the best hiking trails for your dog.

    Special Interest: CampingHiking

Angeles National Forest (Arcadia, CA) is short step away from the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles city life. It includes much of the San Gabriel Mountains and Sierra Pelona Mountains, 176 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail and 5 wilderness areas; Cucamonga Wilderness, Magic Mountain Wilderness, Pleasant View Ridge Wilderness, San Gabriel Wilderness and Sheep Mountain Wilderness.

Purchase an adventure pass at any large sporting goods store, online, or at a recognized vendor before you go. You should also check for last minute notices or closures in the area. There are many trails to consider in the Angeles National Forest. Dogs must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet and up-to-date on all tags.

A few of our favorites are listed below. You can read more about them in our article about the best trails in the Angeles National Forest.
    1. Switzer Falls is an easy, substantial hike of 4-7 miles ending at a 50 foot waterfall.
    2. Cooper Canyon Falls Trail is a short 3 mile hike with a waterfall at the end.
    3. Mt. Wilson Observatory is a popular hike with entry from either Chantry Flats or Mt. Wilson Trails.
    4. Vincent Gap to Mt. Baden-Powell is a great hike for those starting to go up to higher elevation hikes.
    5. Mt. Baldy is the highest peak in the San Gabriel Mountains and one to check off your list!

Camping is on a first come, first serve basis although a few campgrounds are available by reservation on recreation.gov. Campgrounds are listed on the USDA Forest Service website. Some dog friendly campsites: Bear Canyon Trail Camp, Buckhorn, Chilao, Coldbrook, Cooper Canyon, Manker Flats, Sturtevant Camp, Table Mountain, and Valley Forge Trail Camp.

If you plan to go dispersed camping, you will need a California Campfire Permit to cook or start a fire. Call the General Forest Information line at (626) 574-5200 for notices or updates to regulations.

Take a photo of your dog by the trailhead or with an awesome view! Which trail did you go on and what would you recommend to others with dogs?

Pay attention to your dog's abilities and start slow. Remember to take small and steady water breaks to prevent bloat or water intoxication. And don't forget to check the paws! Watch your footing and steer clear of wild animals. Please follow leash laws and have good recall on your dog.
