    Go Backpacking With Your Dog

    Special Interest: Hiking

Backpacking is not your typical day hike. It involves carrying much, much more in your pack to get you through the day and camping at night. Before you go backpacking, practice carrying the load you expect to take with you, but make sure you gradually work up to your desired distance. Your dog should also be able to handle the distance and additional weight (no more than 1/3 your dog’s weight) of wearing any coats, harnesses, packs, or supplies. If your dog is not reliable off-leash or afraid of others on the trail, keep him on a leash or choose a location where you can easily find and recall your dog. Plan ahead for the weather and read up on any pet policies or related fees/permits in your chosen area. You may also want to look for streams or water where your dog can cool off and have some fun!

Submit a photo or video of your dog backpacking with you! What did you do and how was your frst experience? What would you change the next time you go?

Safety: Please consult your vet before backpacking with your dog, especially if you have a puppy or a dog that is not fully vaccinated. It's best not to go when it is too cold or hot. Pay attention to your dog's abilities and start slow. Remember to take small and steady water breaks to prevent bloat or water intoxication. And don't forget to check the paws! Watch your footing and steer clear of wild animals. Please follow leash laws and have good recall on your dog.
