Teach Your Dog To Lay Down On Command

    Special Interest: Training

Down is one the most basic commands all dogs should know. Not only is it great for obedience training, but it’s also an essential first step to doing so many other tricks and dog sports.

It may be easier to teach this command if your dog already knows how to sit on command. Stand in front of your dog and have him sit. When your dog is sitting and looking at you, hold the treat in front of his nose. Then, say “down” and slowly lure your dog to follow the treat until he lays down on the ground. You will want to end with your hand close to the ground between your dog’s front paws. Once your dog lays down, give him a release command such as “yes” or “ok” and reward him with a treat or praise.
