The Mogollon Rim (Payson, AZ) marks the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau in Arizona. You’ll be sure to see some spectacular views from the top of the rim with areas extending from the desert floor all the way to tall forested cliffs and ponderosas. Dogs are allowed on the trails here, as well as horses. Dogs must be leashed. You can camp anywhere along the trail or near the trailheads.
Hike the entire 50+ miles of the Highline National Recreation Trail located south of FR300. The trail extends west to east from Pine Trailhead (GPS Coordinates 34.3741207, -111.4434189 Map) to 260 Trailhead (GPS Coordinates 34.306878, -110.951721 Map). The Mogollon Rim will be just north of the Highline National Recreation Trail, but several very steep trails extend off the main trail to the rim. Many trails are easily accessible from the FR300 if you are going on a day-hike. We recommend going with two cars and parking at the start and end of your planned hike.
The Mogollon Rim is managed by several parks. For more information, stop by the Mogollon Rim Visitor Center between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends located at Rim Rd, Payson, AZ 85541 (GPS Coordinates 34.3016391, -110.896378 Map). We recommend that you also call the area you will be going to for additional regulations or special notices or closures in the area: 1) Coconino National Forest’s Mogollon Rim Ranger District (Blue Ridge Ranger Station) – Address 8738 Ranger Road, Happy Jack, AZ 86024, Phone (928) 477-2255 and 2) Tonto National Forest’s Payson Ranger District – Address 1009 E. Highway 260, Payson, Arizona 85541, Phone (928) 474-7900.
