Beautiful white sand beaches - and all dog friendly!

    Special Interest: BeachBikingGreat Outdoors

Sanibel Island is located off the western coast of Florida and an all-around dog-friendly destination. Stop by the visitor center to get the latest information regarding pets on the island. Bike paths are available to help get you around the island. To see a map of walking and biking trails in the area, click here.

First of all, Sanibel is known for their white sand, beautiful beaches and shells! You’ll see an abundance of conch, whelk, scallop, clam shells, and more. The top dog friendly beaches on Sanibel Island include: Gulfside Beach / Algiers Beach, Bowman’s Beach, and Causeway Islands. The best shelling beaches will be gulfside, although it does vary from time to time. Dogs must be on a leash no longer than 8 feet long on beaches at all times. Parking is generally at a pay to park parking lot at a rate of $5 per hour. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted between November and May.

Interesting in boating? There’s plenty of boating, fishing, and water sports in the area, but you will have to call to make sure they are ok with dogs using rentals and equipment.

As one of the best dog friendly destinations, don’t leave here without seeing a gorgeous sunset with your dog!

Here are some must-do dog friendly activities:

1 Lighthouse Park Beach & Fishing Pier

110 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel, Sanibel Island, FL 33957
This is a great family beach that offers plenty of water activities including swimming, fishing, sailing, or windsurfing. You can also go here to collect shells, although gulfside shelling is perhaps better. You can also take a nice, short stroll along the boardwalk and see the wetlands area.

    2 Tarpon Bay Road Beach

    2475 W. Gulf Drive Sanibel, FL 33957
Tarpon Bay Road Beach is located along the southern bulge of Sanibel Island, so it’s a popular beach as it’s close to many lodgings and restaurants. Many come here to shell or swim. You’ll also see a lot of sealife, including all those pelicans!

3 JN Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge

1 Wildlife Drive Sanibel FL 33957
This is a dog-friendly wildlife refuge that features natural wetlands and mangroves and covers 7,600 acres of Sanibel Island. It’s home to otters, raccoons, herons, alligators, dolphins, manatees and other wildlife. To see animals, go during low tide. You’ll need to have your dog on leash and be cautious and mindful of area wildlife. There are several trails on the refuge. The most popular is Indigo Trail, closest to the Education Center. Fishing is plentiful in the area. If you are a bird watcher, the best time to go is between January and April although we aren’t sure how others will take to dogs that may disrupt their bird watching experience!

4 Gulside Beach / Algiers Beach

2001 Algiers Ln, Sanibel, FL, US, 33957
Gulfside Beach or Algiers Beach sits on a Federal nature preserve and home to many shorebirds and sea turtles.

    5 Bowman’s Beach

1700 Bowmans Beach Rd, Sanibel, FL, US, 33957
Bowman’s Beach is a less crowded beach with trails, picnic tables, grills and biking. It’s gulfside, so you may have a great pick of shells at this beach.

    6 Causeway Islands

19931 Sanibel Causeway Rd, Sanibel, FL, US, 33957
The Causeway Islands are a popular area to go to for fishing, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, wind surfing and more. The water here is shallow, so a great option for shorter dogs.

Looking for an off leash dog beach? Head southeast of Sanibel Island to Bonita Beach Dog Park in Fort Myers Beach, FL. They are located at 8800 Estero Blvd, Fort Myers Beach, FL, US, 34134.
